I hope (good word!) it’s ok if I share my own favourite poem about hope, which I discovered through my wonderful friend, Sasha Pavlovska from Riga, who is part of the Solution-Focused Collective and I’m thrilled to say is coming to the UKASFP Conference next week. This is by John Clare, a 19th century poet from England, and is simply called Hope. It is on the public-domain-poetry.com website.
Hope

This world has suns, but they are overcast;
This world has sweets, but they’re of ling’ring bloom;
Life still expects, and empty falls at last;
Warm Hope on tiptoe drops into the tomb.
Life’s journey’s rough–Hope seeks a smoother way,
And dwells on fancies which to-morrow see,–
To-morrow comes, true copy of to-day,
And empty shadow of what is to be;
Yet cheated Hope on future still depends,
And ends but only when our being ends.
I long have hoped, and still shall hope the best
Till heedless weeds are scrambling over me,
And hopes and ashes both together rest
At journey’s end, with them that cease to be.
The bard wrote a lot about hope. Sonnet 29 in particular, one of the most famous, moves in 14 beautiful lines, with not an unnecessary syllable, from despair to not wanting to change his state with kings. That’s the kind of hope love can evoke.
If I have to pick one I will go with Emily Dickinson I dwell in possibility. Loved the podcast! The most influential part of my career was working with Guy.
