What do you want to say “yes” to?

Questions entail embedded presuppositions. These unstated assumptions frame the question. When the conversation partner answers the question, the person accepts the presupposition. Once accepted, it gets very difficult to go back and challenge the presupposition. If the person doesn’t want to accept the presupposition, the person has to challenge it.

Challenge presuppositions
When someone asks you a question today, check the embedded presuppositions and decide what part of the presuppositions you want to accept and what part you want to challenge.

e.g. the question “What is your New Year’s resolution?” assumes that you want to have “a New Year’s resolution”. If you don’t, you have to challenge the presupposition e.g. with “I don’t do New Year’s resolutions”.
