SFP 38 - Episode 38: Exceptional Sessions: Animal-Assisted Solution Focused Brief Therapy & More with Teri Pichot

by Elfie Czerny & Dominik Godat | Simply Focus Podcast | 37:05

“I adore Solution Focus. It’s my home, because it is where there are no assumptions. No one assumes about me and I don’t get to assume about you. And I have to be curios.”

“That you can’t be curios and think you know at the same time. As soon as we think we know there are no good questions.”

“So in a Solution Focused session (…) we have the first part which is all about ‘What do they want?’ (…) and then (…) the second process which is ‘What do they have?’ (…) the third part is about ‘What’s next?'”

Teri Pichot, LCSW, MAC, LAC

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Teri Pichot, LCSW, MAC, LAC, Solution Focused Animal-Assisted Brief Therapist and Solution Focused Trainer at the Denver Center for Solution-Focused Brief Therapy about

  • what fascinates her about Solution Focus
  • what fascinated her when she learned about Solution Focus for the first time
  • how her work changed as a result of getting to know Solution Focus
  • how she works with her therapy dog and how her dog assists her in doing Solution Focused Brief Therapy
  • how she started to bring her dog to work as a Solution Focused therapy assistant and how this influenced her work
  • how having a dog around changes the environment and the interactions
  • how she creates exceptions for her clients with her therapy dog and how she uses these exceptions in the session with asking Solution Focused questions
  • what she does in her Solution Focused trainings to teach participants to use SF on purpose
  • the first third of a SF session – „What do clients want?“ -, the second third – „What do they have?“ –  and the third third – „What is next?
  • how SF needs to be a model of attraction rather than promotion for her
  • the books Teri wrote
  • the Challenge of the Week: 1.) If you have an animal: Notice how having an animal in the room or in your life makes you a better human 2.) If you don’t have an animal or want to do both: Think about the purpose of the Solution Focused question you ask.

SFP 37 - Episode 37: Training Solution Focus: Training Trainers with Brenda Zalter-Minden and Heather Fiske

by Elfie Czerny & Dominik Godat | Simply Focus Podcast | 33:03

„We learn a lot from the participants, the energy they bring, the ideas, the exercises they have done, that work for them. It’s always really refreshing and really rewarding.“
Brenda Zalter-Minden

“So, one of the ways I think about it is, it’s where the juice is. (…) and there are just those times when someone talks about a particular question or interest they have and the whole room is going „Yeah! Yeah!“ and so of course you are going to expand on that.”

Heather Fiske

Show Notes

  • how they listen and pay attention to their participants

And we listened to some of the participants and asked

  • Marcella Stark, Nicolas Taylor, Aryeh Keshet

SFP 36 - Episode 36: Deliberate Practice: Reflecting Solution Focused Development with Scott D. Miller

by Elfie Czerny & Dominik Godat | Simply Focus Podcast | 36:09

„We were constantly refining. There wasn’t really a so-called Solution Focused therapy in the form of a noun. Solution Focus was much more of a verb. And we were interested in exploring all of those avenues.“

„At the same time in order to move beyond that, to get better, to engage more clients, I’am probably gonna have to introduce small variations. Things which therapists do naturally, but they might not do reflectively, so that they know that they are making those particular variations.”

„First I have to carefully describe the outcomes that we are looking for, I have to measure those outcomes and then look for variations in those outcomes (..) to identify learning opportunities.“
Scott Miller, Ph.D.

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Scott D. Miller, PH.D., Founder of the International Center for Clinical Excellence, Author and Promoter of Deliberate Practice, about

  • how he got in touch with Solution Focus
  • how he moved to Milwaukee to work at the Brief Family Therapy Center (BFTC) in Milwaukee
  • what fascinated him with the work at BFTC
  • how the way they worked back then has a lot to do with the work he does now
  • how describing Solution Focus to others led to a standardized approach
  • deliberate practice and how those therapists are most effective that measure their results, reflect their practice, and learn from feedback
  • the Outcome Rating Scale (ORS) and the Session Rating Scale (SRS) and how they can help you refine your practice
  • how well Solution Focus fits to deliberate practice
  • how that way of learning could be transferred to other areas where Solution Focus is applied, like e.g. leadership
  • the difficulty of measuring outcomes and the questions to ask
  • talking the language of our clients or talking about what’s meaningful for them
  • the Challenge of the week: „If you think you are effective, why not find out? Download the measures and begin tracking your outcomes. And see: Are you effective with all your clients? Is it to the degree you thought?”

How we develop our own practice and how we keep on exploring and developing Solution Focus has become more and more relevant and interesting to us lately. How can we stay curios and see our practice and Solution Focus as a verb – a practice that constantly keeps developing, where we learn from our clients, develop new things, let go of other things etc. – and not a noun – an approach that is like this or that with this question or that question. So, we are curios! How could we all embrace that inventor spirit even more and learn from each other and with each other, from our clients and with our clients, and keep on developing SF? Please share with us what you think and how you do that! Friendpower is stronger than willpower. So, let’s learn together! How could we transfer this way of learning to other areas where Solution Focus is used? Share your ideas and thoughts on what inspired you and what differences this makes for you in your everyday life. Share as much detail as possible. Your story might be the one making a vital difference for someone else. Your thoughts and ideas matter and might encourage others to keep on going their SF journey. „I am interested in language and anybody’s use of language is fascinating.”

„Nobody ever asked ‚How did you get out of that?‘ (…) But the fact is, that it is very rare for a therapy session to stay the same. (…) So if it’s really bad what happened that got it better?“

„There need to be, I think, multiple research strategies that are language focused.“

„Emotions are part of life and in particular they are part of language. (…) You can talk about emotions, if you want to (…) but remember it’s talk, you are not getting at emotions in any sense of the essence of it.”

SFP 34 - Episode 34: Back to the Roots: A Conversation about the Beginning of Solution Focus with Eve Lipchik

by Elfie Czerny & Dominik Godat | Simply Focus Podcast | 33:03

„We would be a group behind the mirror (…) and we would do crazy things, anything went. If someone said ‘Well let’s do this, let’s try this, it’s never been done before’ (…) we tried anything (…) it was this crazy place.“

„I was connecting with the clients easily. Certainly Steve and I were 180 degrees different. (…) And Insoo had her own style. There was a time early on, I always admired her way of interviewing, and I tried very hard to imitate her, and then I suddenly realized I better be myself.“

„I would just like to see it thrive. (…) I just want the Solution Focused Therapy to continue to be appreciated and taught all over the world as it is now. And however it’s been used, if it works, great. There isn’t one way of doing it.”

Eve Lipchik, founding member of the Brief Family Therapie Center in Milwaukee and the Solution Focused approach
