SFP 49 - Episode 49: Living on the streets: A conversation about connection, humanity and the importance of community with Stacy Nelson

by Elfie Czerny & Dominik Godat | Simply Focus Podcast | 31:24

“I personally do not give money to people that I encounter. The main reason for that is that it can be dangerous for that person to have money on them. (…) So, it’s not about what somebody might do with it, for me it’s more about their safety.”

“Living on the road as a single young woman, I had to seek out community over and over and over again. (…) I really learned how to reach out to people.”

“Your body will tell you if you are in a safe situation or not in a safe situation. And when you meet somebody new, often times your body will tell you if this is somebody you want in your life or not.”

“I also feel like it’s not for me to say what somebody needs or wants. We are all strong independent people that can speak for ourselves. So, what I do is I open up the trunk of my car and I invite the people that I encounter to help themselves to whatever is in there.”

“Anything that we can do to help another person empower themselves can have longterm beneficial effects to that person.”

Stacy Nelson

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Stacy Nelson, rebel girl and peaceful warrior for humanity, who voluntarily lived on the streets for about 7 years, about

  • how resourceful it is to have Solution Focused parents,
  • how it comes that she has a cooler full with supplies for people living on the street,
  • her journey and her takeaways from living on the streets for about seven years,
  • how she dumpster dived for food and shared it with other homeless people,
  • recognizing people living on the streets and engaging with them,
  • what she offers to people living on the street as harm reduction and her reasons for not giving money,
  • how she is clear on what she wants to give and where her boundaries are,
  • what differences having lived on the streets makes for her now,
  • how she found and built community on the road and how she still seeks out people living on the streets as her community,
  • how she lets people choose what to take out of her supply box,
  • valuing and experiencing humanity in everybody,
  • The Challenge of the week: „Keep protein bars in your glove box (of your car). When you see somebody on the street corner, flying a sign asking for help, give them a protein bar, smile, look them in the eyes and acknowledge them as another human being”.

What an interesting podcast with Stacy Nelson. Never before thought about SF in connecting to the lives of people living on streets, living without having a house. In fact, I have worked for long periods with homeless men and later with women as well. That was in the earlier period of my career, so working methods were different.

Still, I do recognise what Stacy says about connecting with homeless people, in fact with all people without judging them. As I started working in a large shelter for homeless men, the first thing I learned myself was not to behave as a social worker that would solve the problems of the homeless. I decided to listen mostly to what the men would tell me and not to judge or tell them what I thought they should do.

The effect was, I do believe, that they came back later to talk to me and some times even would ask my advice. Later on, when I worked as a school counsellor I did the same as I started to listen to the 8- or 9-year-old children and often noticed that listening just was enough for them to be satisfied or helped them to find their own next steps.

In that way, I do recognize the elements of Stacy’s story and love the way she started her adult life to go on her way and experience what people have to deal with and notice how incredible creative strengths men and women have.

Thank you, Stacy, for your story and help others notice that SF for sure is, first of all, a human-based attitude towards others and secondly that it is not about talking techniques and sometimes it is not about talking at all, but about seeing the others as equals and human like we all are. Would love to have the opportunity one day to talk with this incredible rebel! 🙂

Thank you so much, dear Mark, for sharing your experiences. It’s really about seeing people as people, isn’t it? And yes, talking to Stacy is great! Should we connect the two of you?
